This paper proposes a traffic policing mechanism for multimedia communication systems with quality of service guarantees, called Slotted Moving Window (SMW). Moreover, it also presents efficient implementations of SMW and several other well known traffic policing mechanisms, for comparison purposes. SMW main feature is the capability to accurately control the mean cell rate in a cost-effective approach. In addition, SMW is characterized by low implementation complexity, low memory requirements and use of a single low precision timer. Its key idea consists in aggregating arrival events in order to minimize processing and buffering requirements. The comparative analysis concentrates on the number of timers and their precision, the required memory, the processing time, the maximum burst duration and the violation probability. Finally, the results confirm the efficiency and low implementation complexity of both Leaky Bucket and the Slotted Moving Window mechanism.

Implementation of Policing Mechanisms for High Speed Networks
This paper proposes implementations of the well-known traffic policing mechanisms for high speed networks. The implementations are based on a high performance development environment and are described through commented block diagrams. The considered mechanisms are Leaky Bucket with variants, Jumping Window, Triggered Jumping Window, Continuous Sliding Window, Discretized Sliding Window and Time...
متن کاملOptimal Signal Control in Urban Road Networks with High Priority Congested Centers
Keeping the density of traffic flow and air pollution in an acceptable level and developing a good capacity for transit in the high priority areas of the city, is really a big deal in large and crowded cities. To address this problem, a new method of intersection signal optimization is presented in this paper. Based on network fundamental diagrams, an Internal–External Traffic Metering Strategy...
متن کاملImprovement of the mechanism of congestion avoidance in mobile networks
Mobile ad hoc network congestion control is a significant problem. Standard mechanism for congestion control (TCP), the ability to run certain features of a wireless network, several mutations are not common. In particular, the enormous changes in the network topology and the joint nature of the wireless network. It also creates significant challenges in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), density ...
متن کاملnProbe: an Open Source NetFlow Probe for Gigabit Networks
Cisco NetFlow is an industry standard protocol suitable for monitoring network traffic. Although most of high-end network routers support NetFlow, very often flows are computed only on a small portion of the overall traffic due to performance limitation of NetFlow probe implementations. This paper covers the design and implementation of an open source software NetFlow probe designed for handlin...
متن کاملFast Packet Switching Algorithms for Dynamic Resource Control over ATM Networks
Real-time continuous media traffic, such as digital video and audio, is expected to comprise a large percentage of the network load on future high speed packet switch networks such as ATM. A major feature which distinguishes high speed networks from traditional slower speed networks is the large amount of data the network must process very quickly. For efficient network usage, traffic control m...
